Rediscovering the Cosmos: A Conversation That Changed My Perspective

In life, we often overlook the profound details hidden in plain sight, mistaking the familiar for the ordinary. It takes an expert—someone who has spent years unraveling the unseen—to make us pause and truly see. So let me tell you all about an experience that shifted my perspective in ways I never expected. In November 2024, I had the privilege of conversing with Dr. Nilesh Oak, a renowned author and The Scientific Chronologer of Ancient Epics. Our topic of discussion? The Mysteries of Indian Astronomy—a subject that has always lingered at the edges of my curiosity, nudging me to explore more but never revealing itself fully. Until now.

This conversation, which turned out to be far more than just an academic exchange, was made possible by the 6th Edition of Orange City Literature Festival, organized by Raisoni Foundation—a space where ideas meet open minds, and where the past and future find common ground in dialogue. As I took my place on stage, preparing to moderate, I could feel an energy in the room—an unspoken anticipation, a collective eagerness to dive into something profound. And indeed, what unfolded was nothing short of mesmerizing.

Dr. Oak has a gift, not just for unearthing hidden timelines but for making they come alive. His words didn’t just inform; they transported us across centuries, where ancient seers gazed at the same stars we do today and inscribed their cosmic wisdom into texts that have withstood the test of time. The sheer precision of their astronomical calculations, the meticulous way they recorded celestial events—these were not mere coincidences, nor were they primitive attempts at science. They were deliberate, sophisticated, and deeply insightful. And yet, for so long, we have only skimmed the surface, dismissing mythology as mere storytelling and overlooking the encoded scientific knowledge within.

As he spoke about texts like the Surya Siddhanta, about the astronomical precision embedded in the Ramayana and Mahabharata, I found myself questioning everything I thought I knew about history. Were these just epics, or were they cosmic records? How many truths have we overlooked because they came wrapped in the language of allegory? How much of our ancient wisdom have we dismissed simply because it was not written in the format we now deem "scientific"?

What struck me even more than his knowledge was his humility. There is a saying: "The greater a person's stature, the deeper their humility," and in Dr. Oak, I saw this truth embodied. He didn’t position himself as the sole authority on these subjects but as a seeker—someone who, despite years of rigorous research, still approaches ancient knowledge with reverence and curiosity. His willingness to engage, to listen, to acknowledge the vastness of what we don’t yet know—it was this quality that truly left an impression on me.

The audience, too, felt the pull of these revelations. Their questions were not just inquiries but reflections—expressions of a collective desire to reconnect with a history that suddenly felt more tangible, more urgent. We spoke of timekeeping, navigation, the intricate calculations that predated modern astronomy, and of how our ancestors perceived time not just as a linear sequence but as something deeply cyclical, woven into the fabric of existence itself.

The session ended, but the conversation within me did not. I left with a sense of wonder, of longing—to revisit history with new eyes, to question more, to listen more deeply. I realized that Indian astronomy is not just about stars and planets; it is about understanding our place in the universe, about bridging the past with the present, about seeing beyond what is immediately visible.

Thank you, Dr. Nilesh Oak, for this experience—one that was not just enlightening, but transformative. Hats off to your brilliance and humility! 🙏 And here’s to more such moments at the Orange City Literature Festival, where learning knows no boundaries, and where knowledge, once unlocked, changes us forever.

Cherishing A Memorable Day with Akshat Gupta ji at the Orange City Lit Fest

On November 24, 2024, the Orange City Literature Festival became a stage for an unforgettable experience when I had the privilege of hosting and interviewing the remarkable Mr. Akshat Gupta. The day was more than an intellectual exchange; it was a celebration of resilience, humanity, and friendship, made even more special by the presence of someone as inspiring and insightful as him.

The warmth and humility with which Akshat ji accepted the invitation to join the festival spoke volumes about his character. It wasn’t just a professional commitment but also a heartfelt gesture of honoring our friendship. It is moments like these that remind us that truly great people are defined not just by their accomplishments but by the way they value relationships and nurture bonds with genuine affection.

Even on stage, while being in conversation with him, it didn’t feel like a formal discussion between professionals. It was more like a casual, heartfelt exchange with an old friend. The ease and natural flow of the conversation made it truly special, breaking the boundaries of a traditional interview. It was great to meet him after years, and I couldn’t help but reflect on how much he has evolved since the last time we met in 2021 or 2022. Back then, he was already a force of nature who connected wonderfully with kids, leaving everyone captivated. But the way he has emerged and grown since then is simply extraordinary. His ability to resonate with people, especially the younger generation, remains unparalleled. The excitement and craze for him at the festival proved yet again how effortlessly he connects with hearts and minds, inspiring everyone he meets.

The session itself was a treasure trove of insights, as we delved into his incredible journey and the philosophies that shape his life and work. His stories and ideas inspired everyone in attendance, leaving them awestruck by his ability to make each person feel seen and understood.

What made his narrative so compelling was the authenticity with which he shared it. He spoke openly about the challenges he has faced, emphasizing the power of perseverance and the importance of staying true to oneself. His journey, marked by countless struggles and triumphs, is a testament to the strength of the human spirit. He reminded us all that while life may throw obstacles in our path, it is our resilience and passion that enable us to rise above them.

Akshat ji also touched upon the value of humility and relationships, underscoring that success is never a solo endeavor. His words—“Success is never a solo journey; it is a collective effort”—echoed the essence of the event itself, where shared experiences and mutual support created a magical atmosphere. The way he acknowledged everyone involved in the festival, from organizers to the audience, was a reflection of his magnanimous spirit and the respect he holds for every individual.

After the event concluded, the guest room witnessed a different side of Mr. Gupta—one marked by laughter and camaraderie. Renowned author, dancer, thinker and now a dear friend Anuja Chandramouli and I couldn’t resist teasing him, creating lighthearted moments that showcased his playful and approachable nature. Even amidst the fun, his grounded demeanor stood out, leaving us with even more admiration for the multifaceted person he is.

The audience, captivated by his presence, walked away with life lessons that extended far beyond literature. From staying authentic and pursuing passions to cherishing relationships and embracing life’s challenges, his words struck a chord with people of all ages. Personally, the experience was nothing short of transformative. Hosting someone as insightful and genuine as Mr. Akshat Gupta was a privilege that I will cherish forever.

As the day concluded, I was filled with immense gratitude, not only for the opportunity to host him but also for the meaningful conversations and unforgettable moments we shared. The Orange City Literature Festival will forever remain etched in my memory as the day I learned from and laughed with a truly remarkable individual. Here’s to more laughter, learning, and cherished friendships in the future!

Invisible Chains : The Invisible Battle of Mental Health

After my self-enlightening conversation with Kartik Borikar about the often-overlooked dimensions of torture (Which I am sure he will never understandJ), I stumbled upon a video clip that profoundly resonated with our discussion recently. It reinforced a belief I hold deeply: discussing mental health is not just necessary—it’s vital. Such discussions have the power to save relationships, prevent tragedies, and create a ripple effect of understanding and healing across society. In a world where so many battles are fought silently, addressing mental health openly can be the key to preventing further consequences, from fractured families to irreversible actions.

This article may seem long—so long, in fact, that even I, as the writer, feel compelled to warn you about it. But trust me, it’s worth your time. You might think it’s one of those marathon reads, but consider it a long drive with plenty of scenic stops and maybe even a few laughs to lighten the load. So, go on, give it a read—I dare you to regret it!

So, to make it much clearer that I came across an enlightening conversation featuring Aamir Khan (Oh yes here comes a celeb touch J), his daughter Ira Khan, and the U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy, hosted by Netflix India. This discussion delved into various aspects of mental health, breaking down the stigma and emphasizing the importance of seeking help. Here are the key takeaways from their discussion:

Key Points from the Conversation:

1.       Aamir Khan on Mental Illness Stigma in India

o    He highlighted how deeply rooted stigma around mental health in India prevents people from seeking help, perpetuating silent suffering.

2.       Ira Khan’s Experience

o    Ira shared her personal journey with mental health challenges, offering a candid and relatable perspective on struggles faced by many young people with her example.

3.       Parenting and Mental Health

o    Aamir reflected on his experiences as a parent and the importance of understanding and supporting children’s mental health needs.

4.       Social Media’s Role in Loneliness

o    They discussed how the rise of social media, despite its connectivity, has amplified feelings of loneliness and isolation.

5.       The Power of Therapy

o    Aamir emphasized how therapy had been transformative for him, breaking misconceptions and helping him navigate challenges more effectively.

6.       Stigma and Awareness

o    They explored how activities promoting both mental and physical health could serve as simple but effective tools for improving well-being.

7.       Dr. Vivek Murthy’s Personal Story

o    Dr. Murthy shared a touching story from his experience as a doctor, underscoring the need for compassion and connection in addressing mental health issues.

8.       Advice for the Young and Parents

o    Ira encouraged young people to prioritize self-awareness and seek help when needed.

o    Aamir advised parents to foster open communication and create a supportive environment for their children. If not parents then the other relatives but talk.

Reflections on the Broader Picture:

This discussion in between these three emphasized the importance of empathy in understanding the invisible battles many people face. One particularly striking point was how individuals often carry silent burdens, and the societal stigma surrounding mental health issues discourages them from speaking out (Amir gave a right style and words). This silence, born of fear and misunderstanding, deepens their sense of isolation, much like the poison of mental torture we discussed earlier.

The Video’s Broader Lessons:

1.       The Weight of Silent Struggles

o    Many individuals carry emotional burdens without visible signs, often masking their pain behind smiles, humor, or achievements.

o    The stigma surrounding mental health silences those who need help the most.

2.       Resilience vs. Vulnerability

o    Society often equates resilience with silence, overlooking the strength it takes to admit vulnerability and seek help.

o    True strength lies in addressing pain and working toward healing.

3.       Pressure and Its Hidden Impact

o    Unrealistic societal expectations (e.g., success, perfection) create internal conflicts and mental strain.

o    This pressure can lead to self-doubt, guilt, and unacknowledged emotional distress.

4.       The Role of Connection

o    Simple acts of kindness and active listening can significantly impact someone facing mental health challenges.

o    Building genuine connections fosters an environment where people feel supported and understood.

5.       Redefining Success and Luxury

o    Success should be redefined as emotional and mental harmony, rather than external achievements.

o    True luxuries are intangible: inner peace, meaningful relationships, and self-acceptance.

6.       Education and Awareness

o    Recognizing signs of mental distress is a critical skill for individuals and communities.

o    Increased awareness and education can help combat the stigma and provide better support.

7.       The Ripple Effect of Compassion

o    Small, empathetic actions can ripple outward, creating a larger impact on society's mental well-being.

o    Prioritizing empathy and mental health leads to stronger communities and happier individuals.

Reflecting on the combined insights from these discussions, I realized how often we mistake resilience for invincibility. We admire people who endure pain without complaint, calling them strong, while overlooking the immense bravery it takes to admit vulnerability. This misconception fosters a culture where seeking help is perceived as weakness, and silent suffering becomes the norm. This is the crux of why mental torture often goes unnoticed—it hides behind a façade of normalcy.

The video also shed light on how societal pressures contribute to this hidden agony. Expectations to conform, succeed, or maintain appearances create a breeding ground for stress and anxiety. The inability to meet these expectations can spiral into guilt and self-doubt, leading to emotional torment that’s no less damaging than physical abuse.

Consider, for example, the pervasive pressure on children to excel academically or in extracurricular activities. When a child struggles under the weight of these expectations, they often internalize their perceived failures, leading to self-criticism and mental anguish. Without intervention, these feelings can fester into long-term issues, shaping their adult lives in ways that are both heartbreaking and avoidable.

The video highlighted a simple yet profound solution: connection. Acts of kindness, understanding, and genuine care have the power to transform lives. Recognizing someone’s pain, offering a listening ear, or simply being present can make a world of difference. These acts remind us that we are not alone and that our struggles do not define us.

Building on my earlier conversation with Kartik Borikar and the Netflix discussion with Aamir Khan, Ira Khan, and Dr. Vivek Murthy, the message becomes clear: mental torture’s invisibility doesn’t make it any less real. In fact, its insidious nature makes it even more crucial to address. Just as physical wounds require treatment, emotional scars need healing—and this begins with awareness and acceptance.

As a society, we must move beyond merely acknowledging mental health issues. It’s time to actively DE stigmatize them, to create spaces where people feel safe to share their struggles without fear of judgment. Education plays a vital role here, helping us recognize the signs of mental distress and equipping us with tools to support those in need.

Furthermore, we need to redefine luxury. True luxuries are not material possessions but the intangible blessings that enrich our lives: the joy of meaningful relationships, the comfort of self-acceptance, and the peace of a balanced mind. These are the luxuries that nurture our souls and help us navigate life’s challenges with grace and resilience.

Reflecting on both the conversation and the video, I am struck by the immense potential we hold as individuals and as a community to make a difference. By choosing to see beyond the surface, by practicing empathy and kindness, we can create a world where mental well-being is prioritized and mental torture becomes a thing of the past.

To those who read this, I urge you to take a moment to look inward and outward. Are you truly listening to the people around you? Are you paying attention to your own inner voice? Remember, even the smallest act of understanding can ripple outwards, touching lives in ways you may never fully realize.

In a world that often celebrates what’s visible, let us champion the unseen battles and honor the quiet courage it takes to face them. Together, we can build a more compassionate and mentally healthy society—one where every individual has the chance to thrive, free from the shackles of invisible torture.
